From Codex Vocrotha
A rune itself is a simple marking that indicates both a linguistic element (a letter of an alphabet) and a concept (an ideogram), but when one speaks of Runes in the context of Vocrothian history, one generally means Runestones. Built of what appears to be a single crystal of adamantite and carved by lost techniques, the Runestones bear their corresponding Rune on their impossibly smooth surface; they are objects that amplify concepts, forcing reality into conformity with will on a massive scale. Each rune is hard-coded into a specific concept, and when will, tempered by the Rune's specific concept, is focused into the Rune, the rune amplifies will into manifestation with a power unmatched by any known Magic. A Rune, forced to its very limits, was the sole source of the destruction of Throntor and the creation of the Crystal Sea.
Though the true origins of the Runes are lost to history, the Kâlindur were the first recorded users of these items of power, and were believed to have secret rune forging techniques that allowed them to duplicate these objects as needed. During the Kâlind Golden Reign the Runes were used by the Kings and Governors to maintain peace, but as the Nightmare Imperium fell they were scattered. The techniques of their creation were lost, if indeed the Kâlind had actually possessed them, and slowly even the knowledge of their names and meanings were confused or forgotten over the centuries. Many full sets were destroyed by the Warlord during the Nightmare, and by the time of the Throntorian Empire they were exceedingly rare, items of legendary power, that only a handful of men knew of. After the fall of Throntor they became all but legends, their lore confused, their very existence subject to debate by all but the eldest and wisest.
