Erenon Lantradi

From Codex Vocrotha

Erenon Lantradi, son of Zardim Lantradi, was his father's oldest son, and though groomed for the throne of the Maltharian Kingdom from birth, he and his brother, Zhindram Lantradi, shared a sense of intense magical and scientific curiosity that would define his achievements during his brief reign as King.

Born in 2721 DR to a realm that, though still recovering from many of the wounds inflicted by the fall of the Throntorian Empire, was enjoying an extended period of peace and relative prosperity, Erenon was spared many of the cares that had plagued his father during the conflict with the Warlord in his grandfather's time. As a result, he spent much time pursuing his many interests, which ranged from swordsmanship and equestrian pursuits to magical scholarship and statesmanship. A utilitarian, Erenon always sought the practical application of the information he learned; theory was well and good, but he was happy to leave the impressive parlor tricks to Zhindram so long as he could find a way to use his knowledge in the real world. An outgoing man with a congenial personality, he made many friends in every social circle -- even in some circles not entirely appropriate for a Prince to commingle in -- and he always maintained that this was the best way to understand his father's people.

He was married in 2775 DR to Karile Vadanri, the daughter of a wealthy merchant from Highbranch; while they had the blessings of both families, their marriage was a controversial one: while Erenon was, by birth, a Tenebriel, Karile was Solindriel, and so there were many who prophesied that only ill could come of their union. Despite this, Karile quickly became a welcome and familiar face in the palace at Malthar, and Erenon's visits to Highbranch became cause for celebration. Before long their thoughts turned to family, and in 2801 their first and only son, Erithmil Lantradi, was born.

In 2920, Zardim passed on of natural causes; no intrigues followed his passing, and Erenon ascended to his father's throne without any incident. Knowing full well the wisdom of his father's policies, Erenon maintained the focus on diplomacy and trade that had signified his father's reign, but his long partnership with his brother lent a new focus to the Kingdom's efforts. Under the impression that magic could be used to better the lives of his subjects, Erenon commissioned his brother to find ways to apply his magics to techniques that the average citizen could take advantage of. Under Erenon's brief rule, many magical constructs, built for use by untrained individuals -- such as the far-seeing bowls -- were first invented.

Unfortunately, Erenon would never have the opportunity to innovate much beyond his first few inventions. In 2928, while visiting Highbranch with Karile, the two were slain by an assassin, later determined to be none other than the Reaper. His assassination left Malthar in a state of flux for a week; both Zhindram, his brother, and Erithmil his son could have had a legitimate claim to the throne. In the end, Zhindram deferred to Erithmil, although there is little doubt he was concerned by his nephew's single-minded determination to root out the influence of the Lords of Night within his borders, when up until then the Kingdom had evinced only tolerance. Although Zhindram remained a respected advisor to the new King, Erithmil's decidedly vengeful focus would quickly shift the Kingdom from the pursuits of trade and learning to warfare.
